Combined Heart And Thymus Transplant Performed
A heart successfully transplanted into a three-month-old infant is functioning without signs of rejection three months after the procedure. Experts state the organ was revived outside the human body using a specialized circulatory system. The first clinical operation of this type occurred in 2024. The infant had no other survival options prior to the surgery. This medical milestone follows the initial successful resuscitation of the organ. Ongoing monitoring of the patient is currently underway to ensure long-term stability. The procedure follows similar technologies previously applied in Geneva and a 2005 case at the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital in Madrid. This specific intervention in Spain was noted as the first time the technology was applied to a baby only months old.
