Hantavirus Outbreak Investigated On Cruise Ship
The Red Decke-Akse vessel has been denied port access in Europe due to a respiratory illness outbreak on board. The vessel recently departed from South America, where a specific strain of the virus is present. The incubation period for the virus can last for several weeks before symptoms appear. Officials are investigating the possibility that the infection originated in South America. The WHO stated that hantavirus is not easily transmitted between people, and the risk to the wider public remains low. Three deaths have been confirmed, with five suspected cases. The disease may be the Andes strain, which causes flu-like symptoms, breathing difficulties, fluid in the lungs, and kidney failure. The mortality rate for this strain is estimated to be between 35% and 50%. It is possible for the virus to spread from person to person.
