Rare Twins Born With Different Fathers Identified
A rare case of twins born with different fathers has been identified and featured in a BBC Radio 4 program. The phenomenon is described as 'super weird, super odd, super rare'. Twin sisters Michelle and LaVinia Osborne, both 49 and living in London, discovered they have different fathers after taking DNA tests. This is the first such case recorded in Britain. The finding means they are half-siblings, a result of a phenomenon known as heteropaternal superfecundation. This occurs when two eggs released during the same ovulation cycle are fertilized by sperm from different men. The discovery came after decades of wondering for the 49-year-old sisters. This incredibly rare phenomenon has only been documented around 20 times worldwide. The discovery was made due to a Radio 4 documentary series. A new BBC podcast series, 'The Gift,' tells their story.
