Authorities Investigate Hantavirus Link In Maritime Deaths

NPR Washington DC 13d9d Impact 5

Researcher Heimer found that opioid users entering abstinence-based programs often quickly lose their tolerance for opioids. Research indicates that opioid abstinence programs are associated with a significantly higher risk of death. One study reported that the likelihood of dying was 70% higher for participants in these programs. A study found a six-fold increase in sudden deaths during the first year following taser deployment. The findings contradicted claims regarding the non-lethality of the devices. Axon subsequently issued a warning to police to minimize repeated tasering and chest hits to avoid heart-related controversies. The company maintains that the devices are safe.

UC Irvine researchers found that newborns with the highest levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in their dried blood samples were more susceptible to developing a specific type of childhood leukemia. The study compared dried blood samples from newborns to identify these chemical levels. Researchers used birth records and newborn blood spot data to establish the linkage. The findings suggest that pregnant women can pass these forever chemicals to their newborns. Authorities are investigating whether recent deaths are attributable to hantaviruses, according to the World Health Organization.
