Mining Firm Targets 21 Billion Tons of Minerals
Polymetallic nodules located in the area between Mexico and Hawaii contain an estimated 21 billion tons of critical minerals. These nodules serve as a resource for the production of electric vehicle batteries and wind turbines. Mining companies view these mineral-rich rocks as high-value assets for the green energy transition. This volume is more than double the size of the German economy. Mineral resource expert Ke Wang from the International Institute for Resources states the significance of these deposits. The World Resources Institute is preparing to request mining exploitation permits from the International Seabed Authority in July. The proposed plan involves using specialized machines capable of submerging between 3,000 and 6,000 meters underwater. These machines will function similarly to excavators to vacuum up polymetallic nodules and surrounding material.
