Howard County Completes Ellicott City Flood Tunnel

WBAL Baltimore Ellicott City 51d51d Impact 5
A new mile-long north tunnel is being planned to reduce stormwater volume in Ellicott City during major rain events. The tunnel is designed to move more than 26,000 gallons of water per second off Main Street and into the Patapsco River. County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball stated the project aims to address issues where previous infrastructure did not provide adequate drainage. The machine is expected to remove 65 feet of granite per day, which is enough to fill 90 dump trucks. The final version of the project is expected to move forward next year. A tunnel located 150 feet below ground is part of the project to prevent future flood devastation. Neil Augustine reported on the progress for WTOP.

“When complete, this mile long north tunnel will dramatically reduce the volume of stormwater that rushes down to historic Ellicott City during major rain events. And at full capacity, the tunnel can move more than 26,000 gallons of water per second off of Main Street and safely into the Patapsco River.”
