Ukraine Seeks $100 Million For Chernobyl Repairs

Ukraine is seeking up to $100 million from G7 partners to restore the protective shielding of the Chernobyl nuclear sarcophagus. The steel structure, originally installed in 2016 to protect the reactor, was reportedly punctured by a Russian drone. The source noted that the reactor site was the location of the 1986 explosion. Ukraine requires approximately 500 million euros to repair the nuclear sarcophagus at Chernobyl, which was damaged by a Russian drone in April 1986. The US Department of State stated that without these repairs, the structure can no longer ensure sufficient protection. This failure poses a threat of a highly radioactive leak into Europe. The repair costs are part of a larger 90 billion euro support package for Ukraine. The structure, designed to prevent radiation leakage, was damaged by a Russian drone in February. An additional $400 million is still required to complete the necessary repairs. The funding follows the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The United States has released $100 million to repair the sarcophagus at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine.
