Hippo Population Explodes Near Doradal Ranch
An estimated 200 feral hippos are now roaming freely around Doradal, Colombia. The lush environment and lack of natural predators have contributed to the growth of the population. The Colombian government announced an action plan in mid-April to control the feral hippo population. Experts warn that hippo waste deposits reduce oxygen levels in water, potentially collapsing underwater plant life. This ecological shift could subsequently affect fish and manatee populations. Previous nonviolent attempts, including sterilization and relocating animals to zoos, have failed due to the difficulty of tracking the large animals. Local fisherman Yamed Diaz noted that the animals did not choose to be there, but officials argue drastic measures are necessary. Castel Blancos stated that without these actions, the situation remains unmanageable.
