International Fossil Fuel Transition Conference Begins In Colombia

The first international conference focused on transitioning away from oil, gas, and coal has commenced in Colombia. Leo Roberts of the climate nonprofit E3G notes this new gathering differs from the UN model. The conference is being held amid urgency to transition away from fossil fuels due to energy crises and geopolitical tensions involving Iran. Participants are discussing the need for new infrastructure alongside existing UN COP frameworks. Countries remain divided on the specific mechanisms for transitioning away from fossil fuels. The conference follows an announcement made by Colombia and the Netherlands at last year's UN conference in Brazil. More than 50 countries have gathered for an international conference focused on addressing climate change drivers. Nikki Reich of the Center for International Environmental Law described the participating nations as a coalition of doers. The conference includes participation from fossil fuel producers alongside representatives from Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Nigeria. The forum focuses on determining the specific methods for phasing out fossil fuels rather than debating the necessity of the phase-out. Discussions focus on redirecting gasoline and diesel subsidies toward renewable energy and batteries. Participants aim to explore making transition agreements legally binding.
