European Sea Temperatures Reach Record Highs
The 2025 European climate report states that last year was the third warmest year since records began. Rapid warming and below-average precipitation have led to a reduction in snow and ice cover. These environmental changes are contributing to a continuous loss of biodiversity in both marine and terrestrial habitats. Samantha Burgess, the deputy director at Copernicus, noted that reports suggest extreme heat, wildfires, and record sea temperatures have affected much of the continent. Europe is currently the fastest warming continent on Earth, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. In 2025, the Arctic Circle experienced a heatwave lasting over three weeks with temperatures hitting 30 degrees. Wind and solar energy outproduced fossil fuels in Europe for the third year in a row.
