Spain Begins Undersea Power Cable Construction

Spain and Ireland have formed an alliance to study the development of a future electrical interconnection between the two nations. This initiative aims to enhance energy security and optimize renewable energy distribution across the regions. The study will assess the technical and economic feasibility of linking the two power grids. The project aims to establish a direct link that bypasses France, which has previously acted as a connectivity obstacle. The agreement is described as an step for the Iberian Peninsula's connectivity. Spain and Ireland have signed an agreement to establish a 1,000-kilometer submarine cable connection. Spain is developing a second interconnection via the Bay of Biscay to double existing capacity. This new link, along with a planned connection to Ireland, will utilize direct current rather than alternating current.
