Arctic Region Warming Faster Than Global Average
The European continent is warming at twice the global average rate, according to Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. Last year, temperatures in Europe were 2.5 degrees warmer than the period before mass greenhouse gas emissions. One contributing factor is a reduction in snow cover in Northern Europe, which was one-third lower than normal last year. This reduction allows more sunlight to be absorbed rather than reflected. A report explains that Europe is warming more rapidly than other continental regions due to specific weather conditions and changes in atmospheric factors. Heatwaves are affecting areas from the Mediterranean to the Arctic Circle, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in parts of Scandinavia. The Copernicus EU Climate Service report indicates that 95 percent of the continent is experiencing this warming trend.
