Nairobi River Restoration Project Targets 54 Kilometers

NPR Nairobi 14d13d Impact 5
Authorities are working to restore 54 kilometers of the Nairobi River riparian areas. This project follows a major flooding event two years ago that resulted in more than 40 deaths. During that event, rainfall reached 160 mm in a single day, which is a typical monthly amount for the region. The restoration aims to mitigate future risks from river bank bursts. The source identified the Nairobi River as the city's largest river. Current drainage systems were built for smaller capacities, such as 450 millimeters, whereas requirements demand 950 millimeters to 1.2 meters. Resource constraints prevent the full scope of work from being completed at once, though progress has been made on major rivers. The project involves creating trunks on both sides of 27 kilometers of the river. This initiative aims to build capacity to handle weather events for the next 50 years.
