Algarvensis Geopark Joins UNESCO Network

The Algarvensis Geopark in Portugal has been officially integrated into the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The move enhances international recognition for Portugal's geological heritage. The recognition highlights the park's scientific, environmental, and cultural value. The designation follows a process completed in November 2024 and expert inspections conducted in Tunisia in May 2025. The project covers an area of approximately 6,000 square kilometers. The UNESCO Scientific Committee approved the designation during a session last November. This designation is expected to increase tourism, specifically cultural and geological tourism, in the region. Local efforts were made to secure the inclusion of the site into the UNESCO framework.
