Mediterranean Seagrass Stores 540 Million Tons Of Carbon

Radio Radicale Rome 14d14d Impact 5
The Mediterranean Sea has lost approximately 34 percent of its seagrass meadows over the last 50 years. Anchoring is cited as a primary cause for this loss. In particularly heavily trafficked areas, seagrass losses are reported between 30 and 50 percent. Italy has recorded some of the worst impacts regarding this environmental decline. This carbon storage is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of about 430 million automobiles. The seagrass also helps buffer ocean acidification by absorbing carbon dioxide. The findings were included in a report submitted regarding recent environmental measures.
