The main swarming flight of spruce bark beetles began on the first May weekend with summer temperatures in almost all altitudes. The beetles are particularly active in Upper Bavaria and Swabia, where they mate and lay their eggs in tree trunks. Low rainfall and empty soil water reservoirs are weakening spruce trees, making them less able to defend against infestation.
