Iranians Leaking Oil Into Sea Amid Economic Hardship
Satellite images reportedly show a large-scale crude oil leak near Iran's key oil export Kharg Island, covering tens of square kilometers of sea. The oil slick near Iran's Kharg Island is continuing to spread, according to the UK Winward Maritime Analytics Company on May 8. The director of the Darji and Environment Institute announced that the Islamic government may have miscalculated and was unable to defend the oil removed from Kharg Island that it left in the market. The slick extends over 50 square kilometers off the coast of Kharg Island, which serves as Iran's principal oil terminal. Satellite images show an impressive black stain, nearly three times the size of the highly strategic island, through which almost a quarter of the world's oil transits. Leaked crude oil was reportedly moving towards the territorial waters of southern Saudi Arabia.
