Swiss Glaciers Face Increased Mass Loss Due To Low Snowfall

SRF 4 News Bern 4d3d Impact 7

Switzerland is experiencing a snow shortage, particularly in the Southeast, which has impacted glaciers. While some western regions, such as Bernese Oberland and Valais, are closer to long-term averages, the overall situation shows insufficient snow. The lack of precipitation was most pronounced in early winter. Temperatures were cold enough on the glaciers, but the lowlands were warmer. Southeastern Switzerland saw particularly low precipitation, especially in early winter, while the Bernese Oberland and western Valais remained closer to the long-term average despite slightly less snow. SRF 4 News reported that glaciers in Switzerland are currently in a poor condition compared to other years. Measurements are conducted at the end of April to determine the protective snow layer, assessing their preparedness for summer melting.

Approximately 20 Swiss glaciers are involved in these measurements, which aim to predict their condition during the summer. A new analysis indicates that the probability of minor damage from snow conditions is less than 1 in 100, affecting almost all regions of Switzerland except the Bernese Oberland and western Valais. Reduced snowfall will lead to faster snow disappearance when temperatures rise. This is expected to result in an earlier and potentially stronger loss of glacier mass if temperatures remain similar to recent years.

“Wir bestimmen Ende April, wie viel Schutzschicht die Gletscher haben und gut sie vorbereitet sind für die Sommerschmelze. Diese Messungen machen rund 20 Schweizer Gletscher.”

“Das betrifft fast alle Regionen außer gerade das Berner Oberland und das westlichste Wallis. Und damit beginnt der Verlust der Gletschermasse früher und dürfte stärker ausfallen.”
