Industry Group Advocates Science-Led Chemical Regulation

BBC Radio 4 London 16d16d Impact 6
The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) advocates for a science-led and risk-based approach to managing chemicals, including PFAS. Nishma Patel from the CIA stated that decisions on chemical management must consider the weight of evidence from studies and assess unacceptable risks. The association believes blanket bans on numerous and varied chemicals like PFAS are complicated. This call for a data-driven approach aims to inform policy. The UK government is also publishing a national PFAS action plan.

“So whether it's PFAS or any other chemicals, I think the position of CIA is that when you're managing chemicals and looking at how they should be managed safely in use and in the environment, it's got to be science-led and what I mean by that, you've got to take the weight of evidence through different studies and endpoints.”
