Wild Camel Population Increases In Gansu

Approximately 300 wild camels reside in the Gansu Annanba Wild Camel National Nature Reserve. A rescue center within the Gansu reserve has successfully released over ten wild camels back into the wild. Recent observations indicate the species is expanding its range. Local ecological conditions in the region are improving to support the population. Specific numbers for the current population remain unconfirmed by officials. Adult North China jerboa sightings were recorded twice in 2022 within the reserve. Li Weiqiang, section chief at the Yan'an Laoshan State-owned Forest Bureau, reported that sightings have been recorded in Huangling, Ganquan, and Zhidan. The Yan'an University wildlife protection team analyzed that the Shaanxi North and surrounding areas provide a suitable 30,000 square kilometer habitat. The expansion indicates improving ecological conditions in the Yan'an region. The resident population in the Ananba National Nature Reserve has reached over 300 camels, and the species has entered its peak birthing season. Wild camels in Gansu have entered their peak breeding season in April following a breeding start in March. Global wild camel populations have fallen below 1,000 individuals.
