Netherlands Water Quality Threatens Dragonfly Populations
A new red list regarding dragonfly populations has been released in the Netherlands. The decline is noted even in regular, non-protected water bodies across the country. Water quality and pesticide use are cited as contributing factors to the decline. Decreasing amounts of aquatic plants in ditches and ponds are also impacting habitats. The presence of invasive American crayfish, which consume local vegetation, is being considered as a potential driver. The exact primary trigger remains unconfirmed as multiple environmental factors interact. Experts warn that the country may fail to meet EU Water Framework Directive quality standards by 2027. Reduced dragonfly numbers correlate with lower larval availability in surface waters. Butterfly foundations are raising concerns regarding these environmental standards.
