2GB Sydney Sydney 11d11d Impact 5

The New South Wales government announced a $10 million funding boost to address food waste and support families in need. The initiative aims to help charities deliver 3 million meals annually across the state. This funding also supports preparations for mandatory food recycling scheduled to begin in July. Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Penny Sharpe stated the program helps councils and businesses divert food waste from landfills into compost. The funding aims to provide up to three million meals annually and divert approximately 1,500 tonnes of food waste from landfills. Authorities are encouraging residents to use green bins and FOGO recycling as landfill space in Greater Sydney is projected to run out by 2030. New statewide rules requiring major institutions to recycle food waste will take effect in July.
