Algarve Conservation Effort Increases Rare Breed Population

TSF Notícias Faro 11d11d Impact 5

Livestock breeders in the Algarve region of southern Portugal have increased the population of a rare cattle species to 47 specimens in 2025. This follows a conservation effort that began with only five specimens during the pandemic period. The success of the recovery effort was noted by the president of the Azcal association. The species remains rare, with sightings limited to the southern part of the country. The breed had a significantly reduced population around 2019 and 2020. Investment in the rehabilitation of the breed was driven by local tradition and culture in the Algarve and Vila do Bispo. There are currently approximately 47 registered animals of this breed. The Algarve Cattle Breeders Association reports progress in increasing the population of rare cattle species in the Algarve region.
