US Jobless Claims Fall To 189,000
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 189,000 unemployment insurance claims filed last week. This decline occurred despite inflation rising to a three-year high of 3.5% year-over-year. The inflation increase was attributed primarily to skyrocketing gasoline prices. Following the news, the Dow rose over 700 points, or 1.5 percent. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 also saw gains of 0.5 percent and 0.75 percent respectively. Crude oil is currently trading at $104 a barrel. US jobless claims fell to 178,000 in March, significantly lower than previous figures. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 4.3%. April ADP private sector employment is projected to increase by 99,000. This week will also see JOLTS job openings, US company hiring numbers, and productivity data. Other data includes manufacturing, services, new home sales, and consumer confidence.
