Federal Reserve Officials Show Largest Split Since 1992
Four members of the Federal Open Market Committee cast dissenting votes during the latest policy meeting. The move is expected to provide short-term market stability and mitigate risks associated with a leadership vacuum. The FOMC saw 8 members vote in favor and 4 members vote against the decision. The Federal Open Market Committee maintained the federal funds rate target between 3.5% and 3.75% on the 29th. The board recorded 8 votes in favor and 4 against, the highest dissent since 1992. Jerome Powell stated that the independence of the Federal Reserve is at risk due to legal offensives from the Donald Trump administration. The government has opened a criminal investigation against the economist, which Powell suggests is politically motivated. The investigation is described as a legal offensive targeting the central bank's autonomy.
