Container Shipping Pioneer Honored 70 Years Later
Malcolm McLean's pioneering use of container shipping, which began on April 26, 1956, with the Ideal X vessel, is being recognized 70 years later. This innovation drastically reduced freight costs and increased shipping speed, transforming global trade. The first container terminal was built in Hoboken in 1962, significantly reducing the labor required for loading and unloading. McLean's initial voyage from New York to Houston, Texas, resulted in an estimated 90% cost saving.
