Iran's Currency Plummets Amid Economic Woes
The Iranian currency, the rial, fell to a low on Wednesday. Local economic activity in Iran is reported to be largely paralyzed as a result of these measures. The strategy is described as effective but risky. The exchange rate for the US dollar against the Iranian rial has risen from 166,000 and 176,000 to 180,000 in recent days. The rising costs are impacting the ability of millions of people to afford basic necessities including clothing, mobile phones, and laptops. The Iranian Rial has experienced a devaluation, with one US dollar now equivalent to 1.9 million Iranian Rials. Historically, in 1909, the Iranian currency was equal to one US dollar. The current value represents a substantial loss of purchasing power. This represents a devaluation compared to 73 rials per dollar before the 1979 revolution and 1 million rials per dollar before recent conflicts.
