Bank of England Holds Interest Rates At 3.4%
Bank of England policymakers are expected to maintain current interest rates at 3% despite inflationary pressures caused by the conflict in Iran. These scenarios involve stress testing various energy price paths in response to the US-Iran impasse. All three scenarios suggest that interest rates may need to rise, particularly in the most severe case. The decision was reached via an 8-1 vote, with eight members voting to hold rates steady. Chief economist Hugh Pill was the sole dissenter, voting to increase rates by 0.25% to 4%. The current inflation rate is 3.3%, which has risen from the previous month. The central bank aims to return the inflation rate to its 2% target. The next interest rate decision is scheduled for June 18. Analysts noted that oil prices briefly reached $126 a barrel yesterday.
