EU Progresses Toward US Tariff Deal Ratification

RTÉ Radio 1 Brussels 5d5d Impact 9

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the EU has made good progress toward ratifying its tariff deal with the United States. Members of the European Parliament oppose hasty ratification, citing the need for stronger safeguards due to the US administration's threats and inconsistent stance. The agreement requires oil-producing companies to supply at least 90% of the volume supplied in March and April of the previous year. The South Korean government has pledged financial support to oil companies affected by this measure. The report also mentions that the EU is considering suspending the Mercosur trade deal. Lawmakers cited threats from the Trump administration and inconsistent positions as reasons why stronger guarantee mechanisms are necessary for the agreement.

The impasse occurs as the EU seeks to ensure the deal's protections remain effective against shifting US policies. EU media reported the deadlock on May 7. Lawmakers noted these factors necessitate more robust guarantee mechanisms within the deal. South Korea's government announced on the 7th that it would extend the ban on the source of stored and refined oil products by two months to the end of July to cope with supply tensions caused by Middle East conflicts and stabilize domestic prices. The potential tariff hikes would apply to products moving between the EU and the US. The exchange rate of the US dollar against other currencies was 7.8271 Hong Kong dollars.
