French Mutual Termination Agreements Decrease For First Time In 18 Years

France Info Paris 16d16d Impact 3

The French Ministry of Labour reported a decrease in 'ruptures conventionnelles,' which are mutual termination agreements between employers and employees. A total of 538,400 agreements were validated during the year. This figure represents a 1% decrease compared to the previous year. This marks the first time the number of these agreements has declined since the system was established 18 years ago. The decline was observed across most age groups, though agreements for workers over 50 years old saw a slight increase. Reductions were noted in the transport, commerce, and construction sectors. Only four sectors—information, communication, agriculture, and industry—recorded more terminations in 2024 than in 2023. Analysts suggest the decline may be linked to a degraded economic situation.

The number of mutual termination agreements (rupture conventionnelle) in France fell to 28,400, representing a 1% decrease from the previous year. The only previous exception to the upward trend occurred in 2020 during the COVID-19 crisis. Under this arrangement, employees on permanent contracts (CDI) and employers can part ways amicably, allowing the employee to receive an indemnity and unemployment benefits. According to a D'Arrest study, the decline affects all age groups except those over 50, where terminations continue to increase slightly.
