Spirit Airlines Shuts Down All Operations
Airlines are reducing flight operations by as much as 30 percent due to a 25 percent drop in jet fuel supply. The Department of Transportation stated that most airlines will cap ticket prices for Spirit travelers needing to rebook canceled flights. The announcement aims to mitigate risks to the aviation sector's stability. Spirit Airlines ceased operations today following failed negotiations between the airline, its creditors, and the Trump administration. Planes were parked overnight at various airports where they landed to facilitate passenger travel. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated at Newark International Airport that the administration attempted to assist the airline through several proposed ideas. Efforts to establish a plan to maintain operations were unsuccessful. The closure leaves at least 17,000 people unemployed and affects millions of passengers.
