China Battery Costs 35% Lower Than Europe
Lithium-ion battery production in China is currently 35% cheaper than in Europe according to International Energy Agency data. The VW ID4 utilizes approximately 300 battery cells, whereas Tesla models use significantly smaller cells in much larger quantities. Establishing local factories is viewed as a critical step for European industrial independence. Current production in Europe focuses on assembling packs from cells, whereas China maintains a dominant position in the core cell-making process. The European Union is seeking to establish independence in battery cell manufacturing to avoid supply chain disruptions similar to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. This move aims to secure critical components for the increasing electrification of the economy. China produces raw materials and batteries significantly cheaper than Europe, creating a risk of economic dependency.
