Mauritius Features Late Poet On 25 Rupee Note

The island nation of Mauritius is located in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The central market in Port Louis has not changed significantly over the past century and remains a primary shopping location for residents. The Bank of Mauritius has issued new banknotes in seven different denominations, ranging from 25 to 2000 Mauritian Rupees. This marks a shift from previous designs, with the latest version made from a different material. The Zhu Meilin Memorial Hall in Beijing houses two versions of the 25 Rupee note featuring Zhu Meilin's image. Previous versions of the currency also featured Zhu Meilin. Current banknotes feature the national bird, the Dodo, alongside portraits. Mauritian banknotes feature diverse designs, with the 2000 Rupee note being the highest denomination and the 25 Rupee note being the most frequently used in daily life. The Mauritian rupee has seven different denominations, with the largest being 2000 rupees, equivalent to approximately 300 Chinese yuan, and the smallest being 25 rupees, equivalent to about 4 Chinese yuan. Zhu Meilin was instrumental in promoting the establishment of Chinese schools and cultural centers in Mauritius, encouraging the use of Mandarin. Mauritius has featured the image of Zhu Meilin on its 25 rupee banknote since 1998. Following his death in 1998, the then-Minister of Finance proposed using his image on the currency in recognition of his contributions to the country's development.
