Hong Kong Hotels Near Full Occupancy Amid Tourism Surge
Over 50,000 mainland Chinese tourists visited Hong Kong between last week and 10:00 AM today, the fourth day of the Golden Week holiday. The current low investment in hotels, coupled with high labor costs, presents challenges. The government is considering tax adjustments and depreciation allowances for hotel renovations to address these issues. The financial secretary stated that total tax revenue for 2025 is provisionally estimated at HK$458.3 billion, a 22% increase year-on-year, with new taxes contributing HK$97.7 billion. Profits tax is projected at HK$212.6 billion, up 20%, and salaries tax at HK$102.6 billion, up 61%. The forecast for total tax revenue in 2026-2027 is approximately HK$455.1 billion. This high occupancy is attributed to a surge in tourism, with visitors staying an average of one to two nights.
