US GDP Growth Slows To 2 Percent
The United States economy grew by only 1.4% in the fourth quarter. United States GDP grew by 2 percent on an annualized basis in the first quarter, according to data reported by CRI News Radio. Personal consumption expenditure, which accounts for approximately 70 percent of the US economy, grew by 1.6 percent compared to 1.9 percent in the previous quarter. The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index rose 3.5 percent year-over-year in March, exceeding the 2.8 percent recorded in the prior month. First quarter GDP growth reached 2 percent, below market expectations. This figure fell below analyst expectations of 2.3 percent growth. The growth follows a recovery from a 0.5 percent contraction in the final quarter of last year caused by the longest federal government shutdown in history. Strong demand from both corporations and consumers drove the current recovery.
