ECB Maintains Interest Rates Amid Inflation

NPO Radio 1 Frankfurt 12d10d Impact 8

The European Central Bank has decided it does not yet find it necessary to intervene regarding rising inflation. In Portugal, inflation reached 3.4% in April, an increase of 0.7 percentage points from the previous month. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro stated there is no reason for alarm while meeting with ministers in Beja. Markets are now speculating on a possible rate increase in June if price trends continue. The European Central Bank kept the deposit facility rate unchanged at 2.0 percent despite rising inflation. This marks the seventh consecutive time the central bank has held rates steady. Economists expect the central bank may raise rates later this year once more data is available to assess the consequences of the Iran war.

Economists expect the central bank may raise rates later this year once more data is available to assess the consequences of the Iran war. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated during a press conference in Frankfurt that the war involving Iran has caused energy prices to rise significantly. The bank is currently managing these economic pressures alongside the ongoing conflict. These rising energy costs are contributing to higher overall inflation levels. French inflation rose to 2.2% in April from 1.7% in March, driven largely by rising energy prices linked to the war in Iran. The European Central Bank held interest rates as inflation in the 21-nation eurozone rose to 2.6 percent in March.
