France Economic Growth Stagnates In Q1

Economic activity in France entered a period of stagnation during the first quarter of the year. France's economy is described as very fragile following nine years of Emmanuel Macron's presidency. The country has accumulated 1.3 trillion euros in debt. This debt level is cited as a factor weakening the nation during current energy and geopolitical crises. The speaker noted that European reserves are insufficient to last more than a few months. Preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies released on April 30 shows France's GDP recorded zero percent growth in the first quarter, falling below expectations. Household consumption rebounded by 0.7% in March, but remained down 0.6% for the overall quarter. Inflation rose by 2.2% in April on a year-over-year basis. The stagnation is attributed to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
