Moscow Considers Cryptocurrency Mining Ban
Russian Deputy Energy Minister Petr Kanyushenko stated that a ban on crypto mining in Moscow and the Moscow region is currently under consideration. The initiative is scheduled for discussion at a government energy commission meeting on May 18. Authorities are responding to concerns raised by regional opposition regarding energy deficits. Full mining bans have been in effect since last year in 10 Russian regions, including the North Caucasus republics, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. Seasonal restrictions in Buryatia and southern Irkutsk Oblast have previously been replaced by year-round bans. Dmitry Kirillov, head of digital law at Leading Law Firm, stated that such a decision would be a sensitive and sad event as people would lose a source of income. The total capacity of affected facilities is estimated to exceed 700 megawatts.
