Ukraine Receives 30 Million Euros for Chernobyl Protection

Ukraine is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster with ceremonies, moments of silence, exhibitions, and wreath-laying. President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to attend an event at the power plant site. The disaster, which occurred on April 26, 1986, remains the worst civilian nuclear catastrophe in history, leading to the forced resettlement of over 100,000 people. Recent Russian attacks on Ukraine have killed eight people and injured nearly 50, with over 600 drones and nearly 50 cruise missiles and rockets reportedly fired. President Zelenskyy accused Russia of nuclear terrorism during the observances. Since the February 2022 invasion, Russian missiles and drones have reportedly flown near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant site. Ukrainians gathered at the Chernobyl Heroes Memorial to pay respects despite the ongoing conflict. Ukraine has received its first 30 million euros from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's protective arch. The funds are designated for damage assessment, design, and equipment procurement. Total restoration costs for the area are estimated at 500 million euros. Over 11,000 consumers in the region remain without electricity as of Monday morning.
