GEMA Members Overturn Distinction Abolition
GEMA plans to gradually abolish the traditional distinction between "E-Musik" (serious music) and "U-Musik" (entertainment music). This change is as GEMA distributes substantial funds to musicians, including income from radio, concerts, streaming, and grants. Previously, about one-third of these grants were automatically reserved for E-Musik, despite its economic contribution to the grant pool being only approximately 3%. So-called E-Musik was reserved, despite contributing only about 3% economically to the funding pot, providing context for the GEMA decision. The German performing rights organization GEMA decided to abolish the distinction between 'serious music' (E-Musik) and 'entertainment music' (U-Musik). This reform was approved with a two-thirds majority at the GEMA members' meeting yesterday. GEMA ensures artists receive payment when their music is played.
