Language Preservation Challenges Face Kaçavachia and Karachay-Cherkessia

Regions in the Caucasus, including Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia, are experiencing difficulties regarding the preservation of native languages. The discussion said the importance of looking at the historical formation of these autonomous areas to understand current linguistic challenges. Residents are currently concentrated in compact settlements located primarily in river valleys and gorges. These communities face geographic limitations despite living within their ancestral homelands. The lack of available land is described as an acute issue for the population. Residents report being pushed into reservations, which has resulted in highly compact living conditions. The community expresses a critical shortage of land necessary to maintain their traditional way of life. These borders were established under Russian colonial administration, impacting the linguistic and cultural landscape of the region.
