Traditional Paper Cutting Craft Thrives In Safin, Vietnam

Phạm Văn Độc is creating custom artwork, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail in every cut, trim, and polish. The craft is very delicate and difficult, requiring patience and practice to achieve realism in shape and form. He learned from his father and observed others, leading him to dedicate himself to this craft. Despite the digital presence, no children are currently learning the craft or picking up the tools. This dedication allows for the combination of skill and emotion in each product. He and his wife understand each other and develop the industry together, staying authentic and not falling behind. He started as an ordinary person, creating beautiful works that captivated him, inspiring him to try and create many pieces. He finds the craft demanding and intricate, unlike other professions. While he currently assists with small tasks in his craft during free time, his children, aged 10, 11, and in sixth grade, have not yet shown interest in learning the trade. His work combines technical skill with emotional expression, aiming for authenticity and quality. Artist Lê Tiên Vượng, director of the Artist Association, was invited to discuss how to encourage painting enthusiasts to become recognized artists. The traditional paper cutting craft in Vietnam is supporting livelihoods, allowing practitioners to earn enough for food and sleep.
