Armed Conflict in Eastern Chad Kills 42
A 17-year-old female football striker was killed during the two-year conflict in Northern Ethiopia. The victim was a college student studying information technology before joining the army. United Nations human rights organizations and journalists reported systematic sexual abuse during the course of the war. The victim had played football since age seven and played for the sub-Andersa female football team. The athlete reported that her body and mind are traumatized by her experiences on the battlefield. She noted that the environment was not welcoming and left her feeling isolated. Her trauma has prevented her from continuing her football career and her mentorship initiative for teenagers. She stated she is unable to focus on her football career due to the psychological impact of the conflict.
