Separatist Group Seeks Independence In Northern Mali
The Front for the Liberation of Azawad, a Tuareg pro-independence group, is seeking to establish a new country. The FLA (Fulani Liberation Army) was involved in a battle with the Asawadi Liberation Army near the Algerian border last year. That engagement resulted in upwards of 80 men lost following an ambush. Tuareg rebels are pushing for secession from the Malian government in Bamako. An alliance with the G5 Sahel Joint Force converges on the objective of overthrowing the central government. After the government's fall, each group will likely pursue its own strategy. Observers consider the success of this alliance unlikely. Following weekend attacks, the situation in Bamako and other parts of Mali has become quieter. The West African branch of Al-Qaeda, Jihadist Milz Jeanine, has allied with a Tuareg rebel alliance in northern Mali. Both groups are reportedly supporting each other.
