Germany Proposes Mine-Locating Support In Persian Gulf
Analysts are comparing the recent incursion in the Strait of Hormuz to the Suez Canal crisis. Iran claims full control over the strait and asserts no vessel can pass without Iranian military authorization. Strikes have been reported against individual dry cargo ships and tankers. Macron rejected participation in this operation. President Trump stated on May 4 that the United States is beginning a maritime operation today. The United States is conducting central operations for Project Freedom, involving more than 100 aircraft. German officials stated the deployment depends on the end of the war as a prerequisite. Germany intends to provide capabilities to locate mines and inform freighters of safe routes in the Persian Gulf rather than directly escorting ships. The proposal includes a request for the US Navy to remain nearby in case of Iranian aggression.
