Rebel Blockades Impact Bamako Access Roads
The West African state of Mali is facing a partial blockade of its capital city, Bamako, by Islamist militants. A correspondent noted that while gunfire has occurred, it has not been as heavy as the gunfight on April 25th. The reporter described the current security situation as something in the last 30 years. The BBC reported this as the heaviest gunfight heard in the region in 30 years. A spokesperson for Genim released a video claiming all access to Bamako is being blocked, though several alternative routes may still be available. The situation remains unconfirmed regarding the total effectiveness of the blockade. Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM Group and Tuareg separatist rebels have imposed blockades on at least three of the six major roads leading to Bamako. A total blockade has also been implemented on the nearby town of Segu, leaving thousands of people stranded.
