Security Suspect Under Interrogation After Bamako Explosions
The United States Embassy has advised American citizens in Mali to shelter in place due to instability. Local residents report that a mosque has also been destroyed. Several terrorists were killed and equipment was destroyed during the operation. Authorities warned against sharing videos intended to incite general unrest. Video footage shows destroyed houses, debris, and militants on motorcycles and pickup trucks gathering near a military base. The incident follows a period of instability in Mali involving groups like JNIM, an Al-Qaeda affiliate. The JNIM group, an Al Qaeda affiliate active in West Africa since 2017, is linked to recent activity in Kidal, northeast Mali. Masked individuals have been observed in the region where criminal gangs are also active. The UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA and German Bundeswehr forces completed their withdrawal from Mali in late 2023.
